Are Compostable Bags Plastic?

1 min read

Not in the usual sense. Certified compostable bags look and feel like plastic, but they are made from materials designed to be broken down by microorganisms into compost. Conventional plastic bags are made from fossil fuels and are not designed to break down at all.

Why they feel like plastic

Compostable bags are made from bioplastics, also called bioresins. These are polymers too, which is why they are thin, flexible and strong. The difference is what happens at the end of their life.

Conventional plastic bag

Certified compostable bag

Typical source

Fossil fuels

Plant-based or bio-based resins

End of life

Stays in landfill or the environment for centuries

Breaks down into compost under certified conditions

Leaves behind

Microplastics

No toxic residue, as required by the standard

What Earthmate bags are made of

Earthmate bags are made from all natural, vegetable-based bioresins, not fossil-based resins. We source our certified-compostable resins in Canada, the United States and Europe, then extrude and convert them into bags in our own Ontario facility. The finished bags are certified home compostable to NF T51-800:2015.

You get the strength you expect from a plastic bag, with no plastic left behind.
