Are Poop Bags Compostable?

Certified compostable poop bags are, and some can even be composted at home. Here is how to set up a simple, safe dog-waste compost in your backyard.
Step by step: composting dog waste at home
1. Use certified home compostable bags. Industrial-only bags may not break down at backyard temperatures.
2. Set up a dedicated bin. Keep pet waste separate from your kitchen and garden compost.
3. Choose the spot. Pick a sunny place away from vegetable gardens, wells and streams.
4. Add carbon. Cover each deposit with dry leaves, sawdust or shredded cardboard to control moisture and odour.
5. Keep it moist and aerated. Turn or stir the pile from time to time.
6. Use the finished compost wisely. Spread it on ornamental plants, trees or lawns, never on food crops.
No backyard? Check your city
Some Canadian municipalities accept pet waste in their green bin program, and some also accept compostable bags. The rules vary, so check your city’s waste guide before you start.
