Microplastic Pollution in Coastal Waters Tied to Serious Health Risks

People living near coastal waters heavily polluted with microplastics may face a significantly higher risk of developing chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes, stroke, and coronary artery disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

“This is one of the first large-scale studies to suggest a potential link between living near highly microplastic-polluted waters and chronic illnesses,” said senior author Dr. Sarju Ganatra, medical director of sustainability at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Massachusetts.

Although the study focused on ocean water pollution, Ganatra stressed that microplastics are widespread. “They’re in the water we drink, the food we eat—especially seafood—and the air we breathe,” he said.

A Correlation, Not Causation

The research analyzed microplastic concentrations in coastal waters within 200 nautical miles of 152 counties along the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts between 2015 and 2020. Health data from those regions revealed:

  • An 18% higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes

  • A 9% higher risk of stroke

  • A 7% higher risk of coronary artery disease

However, the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Critics point out that many variables weren’t accounted for, including the actual levels of microplastics in individual residents.

“We didn't measure microplastic levels in people, and we don’t yet fully understand how these particles may cause harm,” Ganatra added. “More research is needed before drawing definitive conclusions.”

The Safer Choice: Real 100% Home Compostable Bioplastics:

What can we do to protect ourselves and the planet? One of the most effective actions is to reduce plastic use altogetherand choose real, certified home compostable alternatives—like Earthmate 100% Home Compostable Waste Bags. Unlike conventional plastic or greenwashed “biodegradable” options, Earthmate products fully break down without leaving behind harmful microplastics.

This makes them a safer choice not just for the environment, but also for human health. By using materials that compost completely at home, consumers help prevent microplastics from entering water systems, soils, and eventually—our bodies.

Protecting Ourselves Begins at Home

As scientific evidence mounts on the health dangers of microplastics, the message is clear: we must shift away from conventional plastics and toward genuinely safe, compostable alternatives.

Earthmate’s 100% home compostable waste bags are made in Canada, certified compostable, and designed to vanish naturally—leaving no toxic trace behind. They’re a small change with a big impact on both personal health and environmental well-being.
