Are All Dog Poop Bags Biodegradable?

No, most dog poop bags are not biodegradable. The cheap rolls sold at most stores are made from conventional polyethylene, the same plastic as grocery bags. In a landfill, that plastic can last for hundreds of years.
The three types of dog poop bags
1. Conventional plastic bags. Made from fossil fuels. They do not break down in any meaningful time.
2. “Degradable” or “oxo-degradable” bags. Regular plastic with additives that make it crumble. It breaks into tiny pieces, but those pieces are still plastic.
3. Certified compostable bags. Made from plant-based materials that microorganisms can fully turn into compost, under conditions verified by an independent lab.
Only the third type actually returns to the soil.
Why the word “biodegradable” is not enough
Almost anything biodegrades eventually, so the word alone tells you very little. It does not say how long it takes, or under what conditions. A certification to a recognised compostability standard is the proof that matters.
The Earthmate difference
Earthmate bags are certified home compostable to the NF T51-800:2015 standard, registered with DIN CERTCO. They are made from vegetable-based bioresins, not fossil-based plastic, and manufactured in our own facility in Ontario, Canada.
