Are Dog Poop Bags Biodegradable?

1 min read

Standard dog poop bags are not. They are made of conventional plastic, which does not biodegrade in any useful time frame. Even bags labelled “biodegradable” often fail to break down where most of them end up: the landfill.

The landfill problem

Biodegradation needs microorganisms, oxygen and moisture. A modern landfill is packed tight and sealed, so very little oxygen reaches the waste. Under those conditions, even materials that should break down can stay intact for a very long time.

So the real question is not only “is the bag biodegradable?” but also “will it end up somewhere it can break down?”

Why compost beats landfill

A compost pile is built for biodegradation: air, moisture and microorganisms are all present. That is why a certified compostable bag, placed in a compost, is the combination that actually closes the loop.

Earthmate’s approach

Earthmate bags are certified home compostable to NF T51-800:2015, so they are tested to break down in a backyard compost, not just an industrial one. If your city’s compost program accepts pet waste, check whether it also accepts compostable bags.
