Are Dog Poop Bags Really Biodegradable?

Many are not, despite what the box says. “Biodegradable” is one of the most overused words in pet products. Here is how to tell an honest claim from greenwashing.

Five red flags on the box

1.        No standard named. “Biodegradable” with no certification behind it.

2.        No certification body. A logo with no organisation you can look up.

3.        “Degradable” or “oxo” wording. These bags fragment into microplastics.

4.        Vague green words. “Eco”, “earth-friendly” or “plant-inspired” with no details.

5.        No disposal advice. An honest brand tells you where the bag can go.

What an honest claim looks like

An honest claim names the standard, the certifier and the conditions, and lets you check them. For example, here is Earthmate’s:

Certified home compostable to NF T51-800:2015, registered with DIN CERTCO. Test report No. 0-1-92-BAW-2025 available on our technology page.

Why we are transparent

Earthmate is a small, family-owned company that has made its bags in Ontario, Canada, since 2015. We extrude and convert our bags in our own facility, so we know exactly what goes into them: vegetable-based bioresins, not fossil-based plastic.
